Founding the us-Sunnah Foundation: A Waqf-First Vision for Global Impact

Today marks a significant milestone in our charitable work: the official founding and registration of the us-Sunnah Foundation as a 501(c)(3) organization in the United States, alongside the submission of registration papers for Yayasan us-Sunnah as an official charity in Indonesia, alhamdulillah.

A Vision Born from Need

The inspiration for founding us-Sunnah Foundation came from witnessing the dire circumstances facing orphans and vulnerable communities, particularly in Indonesia. After extensive research and consultation with Islamic scholars, we decided to establish a foundation built on the principles of Waqf (religious endowment) – a sustainable model that ensures long-term impact rather than temporary relief.

Dual Registration: Maximizing Global Impact

United States (501c3 Status): Our US registration allows American donors to receive tax deductions for their charitable contributions while ensuring full transparency and accountability under American nonprofit law.

Indonesia (Yayasan us-Sunnah): Our Indonesian registration enables us to work directly within local communities, understanding cultural nuances and building trust with families and local authorities.

This dual-country approach allows us to bridge the gap between Western donors seeking transparency and Indonesian communities needing direct, culturally-sensitive assistance, inshaa' Allah.

Our Waqf-First Philosophy

Unlike traditional charities that operate solely on donations, us-Sunnah Foundation adopts a Waqf-first mindset. This Islamic concept of religious endowment means creating self-sustaining assets that generate ongoing revenue for charitable purposes.

Our Initial Goals:

Rice Field Acquisition: Purchase productive rice fields that will generate continuous income through agricultural output. This provides:

  • Steady revenue stream for orphan support
  • Food security for local communities
  • Economic development in rural areas
  • Long-term sustainability independent of external donations

Low-Income Housing Development: Build affordable housing that serves dual purposes:

  • Providing safe, dignified housing for families in need
  • Generating rental income to fund our operations
  • Creating construction jobs for local workers
  • Establishing permanent community assets

Sustainable Operations Model

Our operational structure is designed for maximum efficiency and transparency:

Primary Revenue Sources:

  • Waqf property income (rice fields, rental properties)
  • Supplemental donations for immediate needs
  • Grant funding for specific projects

Cost Structure:

  • 80% direct beneficiary support (orphan care, education, food)
  • 15% program administration and development
  • 5% fundraising and donor relations

Target Impact: Thousands of Lives

Our goal is ambitious but achievable: to support thousands of orphans across Indonesia through:

  • Educational Support: School fees, supplies, uniforms, and higher education scholarships
  • Healthcare Access: Medical treatment, preventive care, and health insurance
  • Nutritional Security: Regular meals, food packages, and nutrition education
  • Skills Development: Vocational training and life skills programs
  • Emotional Support: Counseling, mentorship, and community integration

Special Focus: Rohingya Refugees

Given the ongoing crisis facing Rohingya refugees, us-Sunnah Foundation has identified this community as a priority. Our support includes:

  • Emergency shelter and basic necessities
  • Integration support for those relocated to Indonesia
  • Educational opportunities for refugee children
  • Healthcare access for vulnerable populations

Looking Forward: A Decade of Service

As we launch us-Sunnah Foundation in 2014, our vision extends far beyond immediate relief. We're building infrastructure for over a decade of sustained service. By 2024, we anticipate:

  • Multiple Waqf properties generating substantial annual income
  • Direct support for over 5,000 orphans and vulnerable children
  • Established educational programs in multiple Indonesian provinces
  • Recognition as a leading model for sustainable Islamic charity

Islamic Principles in Practice

Every aspect of us-Sunnah Foundation reflects core Islamic values:

  • Amanah (Trust): Complete transparency in fund management and program delivery
  • Ihsan (Excellence): Striving for the highest quality in all our services
  • Adl (Justice): Ensuring equitable distribution of aid regardless of background
  • Hikmah (Wisdom): Using Waqf principles for long-term sustainability

Call to Action

The registration of us-Sunnah Foundation is just the beginning. We invite fellow Muslims and humanitarian supporters to join this vision of sustainable charity. Whether through:

  • One-time donations for immediate needs
  • Recurring contributions for ongoing support
  • Waqf contributions for permanent endowments
  • Volunteer expertise in various fields
  • Spreading awareness of our mission

Every contribution, no matter the size, becomes part of a larger movement toward self-sustaining charitable work that honors Islamic principles while meeting urgent humanitarian needs.

Final Reflection

As we officially begin this journey, I'm reminded of the Quranic verse: "And whoever saves a life, it is as if he has saved all of mankind" (5:32). Through us-Sunnah Foundation, we're not just saving individual lives – we're building systems that will continue saving lives for generations to come.

May Allah bless this endeavor, accept our efforts, and make us instruments of His mercy for those most in need.

Barakallahu feekum for your support as we embark on this decade-long journey of service.
